Jangan Ambil Dia/Bukan Aku | Until The End of Time/Not Me, new EP by Dayang Noraini
The new EP by Dayang Noraini [DN] is almost out! There are two songs, one is a ballad and the other is rock. Both songs are in Malay and English.
DN’s music partner Lee Haji Wahid [aka Roslee] said there’s a bit more work to do:
“I’m busy with the final cover design and CD printing matter, digital distribution [mobile ring tone etc] and also applying for the hologram [from Kementerian] to get permission to sell the CD,” he said.
Earlier this year, DN and Roslee asked me to write the English lyrics for both songs. I was stoked! For the rock track, “Bukan Aku”, I was to write about a girl who leaves her controlling boyfriend! This is called work? [See what UK’s Calum MacColl says about song writing]
Anyway. In the beginning I had grandiose ideas about clever phrases with double meanings and powerful imagery. All that went out the window when I tried fitting words to music which was already written.
Fortunately, DN channelled her powerful musicianship into my simple words and gave them life and meaning.
The ballad “Jangan Ambil Dia” was a straight love song. I drew on those universal feelings that hit people between the eyes when they think they’ve met “The One”. The original Malay expresses something slightly different, DN and Roslee said they were remembering a close friend who had passed away of illness, and this song expressed the feelings of a person not wanting their loved one to leave them. For the English lyric they said I could be more general, expressing the feeling of finding love, which was more accessible.
“For ‘Bukan Aku’, there’s eight bars of rap. Can you write some rap lyrics in English?”
I tried. Really. I would sms them the words, then rap them painfully into my phone voice recorder and send that. OMG. Awful.
Obviously, they came up with their own words 🙂
This is DN’s first recording in English, and I’m honoured to be part of it. I mean, what a rare insight! How many people in the world are writing and recording songs? It’s not exactly run-of-the-mill stuff. Life is good.
